D. Gary Young: Maverick, Shokunin, Pioneer

Posted on November 20th, 2014 | 22 comments

Young Living Founder and CEO D. Gary Young has dedicated his life and countless personal sacrifices to creating essential oils that surpass every quality standard. His motivation? The belief that pure essential oils have the power to touch and change lives. Young Living Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Jared Turner shares his thoughts below on what sets Gary and his approach apart:

D_Gary_Young

Gary Young is currently building a new Young Living farm up in cold British Columbia, Canada. As I think about this great personal sacrifice, I’ve been considering all the things people say about him, both good and bad. Some call him “crazy.” Others call him the “maverick” or “guru” of the modern essential oil movement. As with most leaders of movements that change the world, Gary Young seems to elicit a variety of opinions.

One title I love that describes the spirit of what D. Gary Young represents is that of “shokunin.” A traditional Japanese title, “shokunin” (or “craftsman”) could well encapsulate all the best of Gary. Shokunin are individuals who care deeply about their craft; however, even this literal description doesn’t fully express the full meaning of the word. Shokunin care passionately, even spiritually, about their work—to the point of utmost personal sacrifice. They don’t care for money; they care only to improve the world through the perfection of their craft. In this way, the world is better because of them. They see what they do as an art form that must be perfected every day, faithfully. They never rest and are rarely tired because they are doing what they were meant to do: living their purpose through their work.

Japanese artist Tasio Odate elaborates further:

“The shokunin has a social obligation to work his best for the general welfare of the people. This obligation is both spiritual and material, in that no matter what it is, the shokunin’s responsibility is to fulfill the requirement.”

Gary Young is the true craftsman of the art of the cultivation, distillation, and quality testing of essential oils. He is comparable to none. He excels at his craft not only because he’s done if for decades but also because it is as natural to him as flying is to an eagle or swimming is to a fish. It is what he is meant to do.

Recent demonstrations of his shokunin spirit include the personal physical sacrifices he is experiencing in Canada. Gary recently told us that he is never warm. The only time he’s able to “thaw out” is a couple of hours after he tucks in his bed late at night after a long, arduous day at the farm. And it’s not just the brutal cold: he has cuts and bruises all over his body as a result of his drive to beat the deep winter clock and get people the oils they love.

I tell you this only to show you what we have in D. Gary Young; his dedication to his craft is immeasurably valuable to all of us. Remember: he loves what he’s doing and is meant to do it.

As recipients of this shokunin gift, it’s incumbent upon us to tell the story, to connect others to the Young Living “why” and continue the revolution in wellness that Gary Young started decades ago. We strive to help you tell this story through our emphasis on Young Living’s Seed to Seal® promise, as evidenced in our farm-centric events, the ongoing rebrand, and our marketing materials (check out SeedtoSeal.com).

Our detractors, including competitors, are attacking on all sides. They know that they are shadows of what we are and what we stand for—and they don’t like it. They know that they can’t compete with our original, authentic and rich narrative, so they attack the source of that narrative: Gary Young. We continue to tell our story despite this, and will defend our virtue as the originator and leader of the essential oil movement. Gary Young created a culture and ethos of wellness and empowerment that has lasted for decades—and it will last for decades more.

The bottom line is that whatever our competitors want to call Gary, they can’t call him a copycat. They can’t call him an imitator. At a minimum they can hopefully acknowledge that he’s the real deal and has taught them everything they know about essential oils. Maybe instead of attacking, it’s time that they give credit where credit is due. But guess what? Gary won’t be listening to any apologies; he’s too busy working in Canada to make the world a better place, one drop at a time.

And in case you still want to call Gary Young “crazy,” well, that may not be so bad either. Just ask Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple:

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes…the ones who see things differently—they’re not fond of rules…You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things…they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do.”

Believe In Yourself; Believe In Young Living

Posted on July 8th, 2013 | 124 comments

If you missed this year’s International Grand Convention, you missed out on the unveiling of some exciting products! Among these products was the convention oil blend that has been reformulated for a more optimized effect: Believe™.

The new Believe blend has been updated to add a special touch of Young Living exclusivity and efficacy by adding oils that are grown, harvested, and distilled on Young Living farms. Because of the cultivation, experience, and care of our Seed to Seal® process practiced on these farms, the purity of these oils remains unaltered.

Also with the new formula, Gary Young wanted to include the benefits of Idaho blue spruce and Ecuadorian ylang ylang (one of the convention Exotic Oils, but we’ll touch on that in another blog). With the addition of these two oils and with the current Idaho balsam fir found in the blend, the reformulated Believe now has three oils that are harvested on the Young Living farms in Idaho and Ecuador.

Created to help you overcome occasional feelings of despair and move to a higher level of awareness, Believe also contains frankincense essential oil to encourage feelings of strength and faith. With the other complementary oils that round out this blend—bergamot, coriander, and geranium—this combination of oils may help assist you as you look to unlock your true, unlimited potential.*

You may use Believe in many ways. Whether you diffuse a little before a big date or rub some behind your ears to get you through a job interview, Believe will get you in the right frame of mind to believe in yourself.

Take this time to share what you are looking forward to most when using the newly reformulated Believe. Three lucky commenters will be randomly selected to receive a bottle of this inspiring blend!

Beauty School Highlights

Posted on March 14th, 2013 | 4 comments

With hundreds of distributors in attendance, we held our first-ever Young Living Beauty School March 1–2. With two days of in-depth instruction and well-deserved pampering, we not only learned more about our skin-care products, but we also learned more about one another. Making new friendships and connecting with like-minded people was one of the many worthwhile and unforgettable experiences. With so many memorable highlights to choose from, let’s recap a few of the very best moments.

Gary Young’s surprise visit and inspirational words was definitely a highpoint, which was evident by the overwhelming feedback from our distributors. Along with appreciation for his attendance, many remarks included the following sentiment that is captured by this distributor’s comment: “I was humbled that you [Gary] took the time to honor the women and let us know that as a group, we are important.”

Mary Young’s words of encouragement were another highlight. Her grace and intelligence was appreciated by all, and one distributor stated, “Mary, thank you so much for wrapping your arms around all of us and making this happen. I am so proud to be associated with Young Living.”

When returning from a break, each distributor discovered a beauty kit that was filled with samples and swag, a lovely beauty booklet brimming with product information, and a bottle of essential oil created exclusively for our Beauty School that is befittingly named Jeuenesse, which is French for “youth.” As the distributors discovered all their gifts, the “oohs” and “ahhs” made the elated energy in the room nearly palpable.

Before closing the event, the distributors participated in an auction to benefit the upcoming World Peace Caravan. The support and generosity of the distributors was astounding. Watching them bid to help a worthy cause was impressive. Young Living not only has the best products and essential oils available today, but we also have the most remarkable distributors with big hearts and a desire to share, serve, and make life better. One distributor sweetly wrote, “Dear, precious Young Living: When I count my blessings, I count you twice!” I’d like to add, “Dear, amazing Distributors: The feeling is mutual!”

I would love to hear from you!

Winter Harvest – Part 1

Posted on October 8th, 2012 | 465 comments

Participating in last winter’s Balsam Fir Harvest was an amazing experience that gave me a new appreciation for the dedication of Young Living’s distributors and the lengths the company will go to produce the highest quality oils. Before attending the event, colleagues warned me that the harvest was no easy task, so I was prepared for hard work and helping out where needed. Almost immediately I suspected their warnings may have been understated.

On my first day at the farm, Gary asked me if I could handle a chainsaw.  Being a big, brawny former football player, I thought I could manage. He quickly assigned me to cut limbs from trees that fell into a gulley not far from camp. With snow up to my thighs, I cut away at the limbs all day long while trying to keep my balance on the rough slope. Fighting fatigue and the elements, I hoisted the heavy chainsaw over tree trunks and limbs, making sure I got to every branch. After we cut the limbs, they were loaded onto a wagon for the draft horses to pull out of the gulley. Watching those powerful, majestic animals pull the heavy wagon up the gulley hillside was an experience I’ll never forget. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, but the connection I felt with the land and the satisfaction of taking on and accomplishing new challenges were worth far more than all the effort.

By the end of the day, everyone was exhausted and ready for a warm supper back at camp. Evenings brought an opportunity to relax, forge new friendships, and listen to Gary share his knowledge and expertise about the oils.

Comment below by the end of the day on Friday for a chance to receive a bottle of balsam fir. Be sure to read next week’s blog for more of Brian’s experiences harvesting and more on the new Idaho blue spruce essential oil that was launched at convention.

Summer Cleansing

Posted on June 18th, 2012 | 6 comments

In my last blog post, I promised additional tips for beginning and sustaining a healthy cleanse. But before I discuss those details, I’d like to identify the reasons cleansing can be so beneficial, especially during this time of year.

According to natural-health pioneers such John Tilden, Dr. Randolph Stone, Dr. Bernard Jensen, Dr. John Ray Christopher, Dr. Richard Shultze, and Gary Young, most disease is the result of a poor diet that is high in animal products, overly processed foods, and foods that are high in fat and low in fiber. When we combined this poor diet with environmental toxin exposure and lack of exercise, we develop all sorts of problems such as inflammation, headaches, skin issues, and a sluggish immune system.

A dirty, compacted colon may be the culprit of these health issues. A clean, properly functioning colon, however, is the gateway to vibrant health. The natural-health advocates I mentioned above have taught and proven to their patients that miraculous healing occurs with thorough colon cleansing.

So without further ado, here are a few tips to help you with your summer cleanse—along with some proven Young Living products that will help you transform your health this season.

Tip 1: Enjoy plenty of raw fruits and veggies, fresh juice, sprouted legumes and beans, lots of garlic, olive oil, and add more cayenne to your diet. The more alive a food is, the more prana (life force) it has and the more vibrant and alive you will feel when you consume it. Refrain from eating all animal products, processed and refined foods, sugar, salt, alcohol, coffee, over-the-counter drugs, recreational drugs, and fried foods. Canned and processed food is dead!

Tip 2: Drink more water. I know I stated this in my previous blog, but the more water your colon has, the easier it is to eliminate toxins. Can you drink at least 64 ounces of water a day?

Tip 3: Get your body moving. Do more squatting, such as malasana, and walk more. Physical movement activates peristalsis, the wave-like contractions that move food through the intestines.

Tip 4: Use a colon cleansing product daily during your cleanse. Some of my personal favorites are Young Living’s ComforTone®, ICP™, and Digest & Cleanse™.

If you are cleansing, keep at it and feel free to share your stories and favorite cleansing methods with me.

Namaste,

Tracy Griffiths

Essential Oils Help You and Your Pets Relax

Posted on March 23rd, 2012 | 23 comments

Did you know that your pets are extremely sensitive and aware of your mood and emotions? I know many pet owners who have experienced times of sadness or anxiousness, and then suddenly their beloved cat or dog comes to them as if to help ease their woes. So what do you do when your furry friends are upset, anxious, or jittery? Consider using Young Living essential oils to help.

As suggested in the Essential Oils Desk Reference, “If you have a high-spirited, jittery animal, apply Peace & Calming® and/or Valor® on yourself first. As you approach the animal, it will react as it perceives the aroma. Kneel down or squat beside the animal and remain still for several minutes so that it can become accustomed to the smell. As the animal breathes in the fragrances, it will become calmer and easier to manage.”

For this post I wanted to share a portion of a protocol Gary Young demonstrated on a young horse at the Young Living farm in St. Maries, Idaho.

Gary showed us how essential oils assisted in calming a young stallion as it prepared for a training session. First, Gary applied a few drops of Valor on his hands; he then put one hand on the base of the horse’s tail and the other on its withers.

Gary explained that relaxation is the first step to healing. He suggested applying Trauma Life™, Surrender™, or Peace & Calming™ on your hands and then briefly holding your hands up to the animal’s muzzle or nostrils. As the animal relaxes, Gary explained, work your hand around the side of its jaw and up along the neckline to its ears, and then rub its ears and top of its head.

As the horse relaxed even more deeply, Gary added more oils to the palm of his hand, and the horse inhaled the oils very willingly. Gary continued rubbing the horse’s ears, head, and neck.

I have been working with essential oils and humans for more than 12 years now, but I was truly blown away when I saw how this horse completely transformed from being jumpy and edgy into becoming soft and relaxed!

If you have an anxious pet—or if you are feeling anxious yourself—I suggest using Valor, Peace & Calming, RutaVaLa™, or lavender on yourself. Then gently pet your dog or cat, and see if you both start feeling more relaxed and happy.

Namaste,

Tracy Griffiths
